Emile Reynaud was the one responsible for adapting the zoetrope and the phenakistiscope to create the praxinoscope. Like the zoetrope, images were draw on a piece of paper that went around the inside of a drum. However, instead of having the images being viewed through slits, the pictures were reflected in a series of mirrors mounted in a ring. As the drum is spinning, viewers can see the moving pictures in the mirrors. Also, a candle is placed above to display the images more clearly to the watcher.

Reynaud then developed the design to create the praxinoscope theatre two years later. It had the drum set in a wooden box and the box had a hole on the lid which the viewer looked through to see the animation in context by there being a background scene.
