William Horner
William Horner invented the Zoetrope (which means the wheel of life but originally named daedalum which means the wheel of the devil) in 1834 , which was the third major optical devise after the Thaumatrope and the Phenakitoscope. The Phenakitoscope was invented by Plateau, which is the idea that Horner based the Zoetrope on, but made it more convenient. The animation could be viewed from any angle meaning that it could be observed by many people at once. It works by a drum being attached to a spindle with splits on the outside and paper being folded around the drum with slightly different pictures on. A moving image is shown as the drum is spun and as the drum is spun faster a clearer and smoother animation is displayed. This is using the theory of the persistence of vision.
