Jan Svankmajer's

Jan Svankmajer's

Jan Svankmajer is Czechoslovakian animator extraordinaire who has been making bizarre films since the 1960s. Most of his work is a combination of 3-D stop motion animation, puppets and live action and his stories are described as delightful and surreal. Things that he has used for actors include things such as machines, socks, dolls, stuffed animal corpses, clay figures, skeletons and pencil sharpeners. Czech buildings or landscapes are what he usually uses for his sets, scattered with waste such as rusty nails, oily screws, sawdust and rotting furniture.

Jan used a number of techniques that he incorporated in to his work. One is how he used very exaggerated sounds effects through out his films and in particular, used a very weird exaggerated effect in eating scenes. Another is how he used fast motion for scenes with people interacting or walking. However, even though stop motion appears in most of his work, in his most recent films he has used
more live action than animation sequences.

His most famous work include films such as "Alice", "Faust", "Conspirators of Pleasure", Little Otik" and "Lunacy", and is set to release another film in 2015 called "Insects".
Jan is one of the most famous and celebrated animators in the world who has cleverly created a new and imaginative way of using stop animation that has inspired others to create animations similar to his.
